How Osteoporosis reacts when cannabinoid receptors are activated within the human / animal body....

Osteoporosis is a degenerative skeletal disease characterized by a deterioration of bone tissue. Patients with osteoporosis are at risk of suffering multiple fractures and other serious disabilities. In America alone, approximately 10 million people over the age of 50 suffer from osteoporosis, and another 34 million are at risk of developing the disease - according to the US Surgeon General's office.

References to the use of cannabinoids to protect against the onset of osteoporosis have been available in scientific literature since the early 1990's.

In the January 2006 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, investigators at the Bone Laboratory of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem reported that the administration of the synthetic cannabinoid HU-308 slowed the development of this disease, stimulated bone growth and reduced bone loss in animals. The New York Academy of Sciences reported in 2007 that the activation of the CB2 cannabinoid receptor reduced bone loss and stimulated bone formation. Mice deficient in the CB2 cannabinoid receptor experienced age - accelerated bone loss akin to that of human osteoporosis, according to research done at the time.

Scientists now believe that the main physiologic function of specific endocannabinoid receptors (CB2), is to maintain bone remodelling and balance, protecting the human skeleton against age - related bone degeneration.

What about Rheumatoid Arthritis?

RA is an inflammatory disease of the joints, causing pain, stiffness, swelling, and eventual loss of limb function.

Use of cannabis to combat this disease has been widely self - reported by patients for a number of years. In 2005, 25% of patients surveyed in Australia reported that they use cannabinoids to treat the disease. A similar survey in the United Kingdom revealed that more than 20% of patients also use cannabinoids.

The successful treatment of RA in clinical trials using natural cannabis extracts was first reported in January 2006 at a specialist hospital. Investigators reported that the use of the cannabinoid extracts by patients over a 5 week period yielded significant a significant reduction in pain, pain when moving, and inflammation as well as an overall improvement in quality of sleep. These results were confirmed in later Phase 2 trials investigating the use of orally administered cannabis extracts on patients with RA.

The progression of the disease, joint destruction, and the symptoms of the disease IE: swelling, inflammation, and pain can be effectively reduced and suppressed through the use of the plant extract and has been proven to do the same in animals with symptoms of RA.
